Gary Craig, who designed Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) offers this technique freely to help us all heal. All that I am sharing below in this blog is from the emofree.com website. This process is easy to learn and helps to release reoccurring intense emotional responses to specific thoughts or events. It helps release the, "Why do I always get _________ in this kind of situation?" or "Why does my stomach hurt when I have this thought?" This is not talk therapy or about reliving trauma. It is the process of clearing old, stuck emotions out of the body's energy pathways. By getting the pathways clear, one is able to see an old event without the intensity attached to it.
I am glad to help clients walk through this process as part of any session. Clients should plan to allow 30 minutes of the session for this process. The first time through can take a while as we talk about the process. I have also been taught expanded forgiveness statements that help complete the process. I have a link below to a powerful forgiveness practice from the TOSA Center for Enlightened Living. Forgiving ourselves, forgiving others and forgiving the God or the Universe are important steps in healing. The beauty of learning these tapping techniques and the forgiveness practice, is that they can be applied to any new or old event that causes emotional pain. Remember too, much of our physical pain has emotional roots. Once familiar, this process can be done quickly to take the emotional edge off of an event and allow for clearer processing and thinking. When clients empower themselves with any self care tools, they allow sessions with a therapist to be even more powerful and productive. Healing is a team event. No therapist can heal a client without the client's participation. This is a powerful practice to learn and share with children. A child feeling anxiety about a situation at school can learn how to subtly rub a few of these points to calm down. Teachers could even incorporate the points into a movement activity to get kids ready for a test.
